Smartwatch Technology Discussion
About this show
Introduction
In this episode of Norwich Today, the programme covers football fan experiences and wearable technology. Key moments include a discussion on a Football Supporters Federation survey regarding Norwich City, a debate on ticket pricing, and Dominik's analysis of smartwatch functionality and the lack of heirloom value in high-end models like the gold Apple Watch.
Dominik discusses the nature and functionality of smartwatches, defining them as Bluetooth-connected extensions of smartphones. He explains their utility for health tracking and specific use cases, such as using timers while cooking. The conversation compares various brands, noting the resilience of the plastic Pebble model and its superior battery life compared to Apple or Google watches. Dominik also highlights the high cost of the gold Apple Watch, arguing that unlike traditional luxury watches, smartwatches lack heirloom value due to hardware obsolescence. He mentions owning both a Pebble and a Sony Smartwatch Three.

What kind of defines a smartwatch of today is it actually it connects to your phone, so the smartphone it extends the smartphone, so it's an extension of your smartphone onto your wrist, so to speak. So that's kind of how I would define the smartwatch. It's, but it's it's a watch that does more than just show time or date.
I don't know if they don't make sense on your phone, but one of the things, of course, that you that it works better in some situations. For example, when I cook, I want to set a timer, and sometimes I end up with like four timers for different things that are kind of cooking. And so, what I could do it's much easier in my watch than going over to my phone and with my wet hands.
You know, people who buy expensive Rolexes, expensive you know, thousand and thousand pound watches, they do it as partly, you maybe to show off. But what you have is an heirloom. You can you can you can give it back to your family. The Apple Watch in a year is going to be obsolete because they're going to make a new one.
