About this show

Introduction

In this episode of World Cultures, Dominik explores music from East of Prague, covering traditions from the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, and Russia. Key moments include an interview with anthropologist Iet Anis regarding the Seto people of Estonia and their polyphonic throat singing, a discussion on the history of the Red Army Choir, and an analysis of the musical blend used by Czechomor.

Dominik substitutes for the regular crew on the World Cultures Show, featuring a special theme focused on music from East of Prague, including traditions from the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Romania, Estonia, and Russia. The programme includes discussions on the Seto people of southeastern Estonia, a small ethnic minority who preserved their culture and Finno-Ugric dialect through polyphonic throat singing by women during the Soviet period. Other highlights include the Czech vocal group Spiritual Quintet, the Roma-hip hop blend of Gypsy Cz, and the history of the Red Army Choir. The broadcast concludes with a dedication to Simone, who recently returned from a vacation in Cuba.

Going during the Soviet period was their music, especially set to singing, which is something that's that's mostly done by women, and this was a very peculiar kind of throat singing, polyphonic throat singing. All right, yeah, and and the other thing was they they played music.

Of of silver coins, sort of on their chest, so they have to be pretty large ladies, and and the the singing voice from there is accordingly impressive. So, so yes, this throat singing isn't isn't exactly what you mean when you when you think of throat singing, but it's still.

Chan Chan, and this is dedicated to Simone, who just got back from her vacation in Cuba, where she apparently did not have as much of a chance to to go to gigs of Cuban music. So this one is for her and.
